CASE STUDY: I Had Cancer
INDUSTRY: Health & Wellness
Creating a Game-Changing Brand from Scratch
Strategy
IHadCancer.com was ideated by Squeaky’s co-founder, Mailet Lopez. When Mailet was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 at the age of 33, she had great support from family and friends, but still found that they couldn't fully understand what she was going through. She spent a lot of time searching online, but couldn't find a resource that easily connected her to someone who could answer all of her questions. Mailet decided that she wanted to help the next person who was affected and change the way people deal with cancer. She took advantage of her unique position as the co-founder of Squeaky, and, along with founder Anthony Del Monte, leveraged the talent and experience of the team to build IHadCancer.com – a one-of-a-kind brand that would change the way the world deals with a cancer diagnosis.
Building a Comprehensive Community Platform
Web Design & Development
Squeaky wanted to build a site that would provide IHadCancer.com’s members with all of the tools they needed to take control of their disease. Tapping into the behavioral expectations of users, the site allows community members and visitors to find the information they need quickly and easily. We’ve made it possible to search for other members by location, age, gender, year diagnosed, type of cancer and type of member so that everyone is able to find someone to connect with. Members may also create their own profile, share their story and build relationships with their connections on a peer-to-peer level. In addition, the site serves as a platform for users to engage in multiple ways in a safe environment.
Giving the Cancer Community a Voice
Social Media
With 12 million people diagnosed with cancer in the US alone each year, there is no reason for anyone to ever feel alone. Since the inception of IHadCancer, we have implemented comprehensive social media practices to try and reach as many survivors, fighters and supporters as possible. From viral campaigns (#5words2cancer) to the Dear Cancer portion of the site, we have built a community whose primary goal is to help one another however they can.
